phylum Mollusca The colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis haimltoni, has the greatest mass of any squid, weighing up to an estimated 750 kg (1,650 lb), with an estimated length of 12-14 m (39-46 ft). The limbs have sharp hooks in addition to suckers, possibly causing scars seen on sperm whales. The mantle is heavier than the mantle of the giant squid. The beak and the eyes are also larger. Distribution is the Southern Ocean, to a depth of 2.2 km (7,200 ft).
