Domain Archaea Archaeon is the singular form for Archaea, a domain and a kingdom of single-cell prokaryotes. The oldest members of Archaea were methanogens, and it was assumed that their metaboism reflected the Earth's primitive atmosphere. Lipid traces have been detected in rocks in Greenland formed 3.8 billion years ago. Archaea may have evolved from gram-positive bacteria. Classification is a contentious field that is moving rapidly. It relies on the sequence of ribosomal RNA genes to reveal relationships between these organisms, which is not possible for fossil species.
