phylum Chordata Palorchestes is an extinct genus of diprotodont marsupial that lived in Australia from the Miocene epoch until about 11,000 years ago (well after humans arrived in Australia). It was large (up to 2.5 meters in length) and the shape of its nasal bones suggest that it might have had a proboscis, leading to the nickname "marsupial tapir."
