Erzgebirge is a mountainous mining region between Germany and the Czech Republic. It is well known for carved wooden animals in a particular somewhat primitive style. Toys have been produced in this region for hundreds of years and continue to be popular. There are a number of companies in the area still making toys in this style. The traditional method involves the use of lathe turning to create a round blank that the animals are then sliced from. This is known in German as das Reifendrehen, with animals made this way called Reifentiere. An excellent video of this method in action can be seen at http://youtu.be/COiTnKVbS0Y
