phylum Chordata Anthropornis ("man-bird") is an extinct genus of penguins whose fossils have been found in Antarctica and New Zealand. The wings show joints that appear transitional between flying birds and modern penguins. These birds lived during the late Eocene and early Oligocene, and were larger than any modern penguin: up to 1.7 meters in height and weighing perhaps 90 kilograms.
